Students Use Porn for Sex Ed

A survey conducted by the National Union of Students (NUS) has demonstrated that 90 per cent of the 2,500 respondents believed that sex and relationships education (SRE) in schools is not good enough.

The survey shows that porn is now a natural part of a young person’s life and is filling the gap left by poor sex ed. The NUS has launched its New Deal for the Next Generation, which isn’t a recommissioning of the famous Star Trek TV series but is in fact the start of the campaign approaching the general elections that will spark up in May 2015.

One of the key asks for their manifesto is as follows, taken from their summary page:

  • We want schools and colleges to be required by law to provide adequate citizenship and sex and relationships education.

This is a huge part of what Ohh My… works to provide and the statistics released by the recent survey into Sex and Relationships Education has given more food for thought even for those who try and keep the fridge closed so they can believe the issue isn’t severe.

No more.

Despite nearly three quarters of respondents believe pornography provides unrealistic expectations regarding sex, a staggering 60% also used it to find out more about sex, filling the gaps that were left by their sex ed experiences in the past, of which only a third felt they could apply to real life.

That’s simply baffling and reinforces strongly what we believe is our mission as a business: to provide practical SRE events and services that can help people, and students in particular, to explore sex in an open and realistic environment. In schools at the moment, SRE is seen as science and more often than not included in Biology lessons, which is definitely important but only a small part of what people need to know to have a positive impact on their practical sex lives.

We are working hard on developing a comprehensive online education section on this site that will fill some of these gaps in SRE and the Ohh My… Experience offers a practical, entertaining way to teach students and others about sex. This news only serves to prove yet again how important it is that we continue to work and push this message out there.

Support us now by connecting us with your local student bodies so that we can make a difference to people’s lives today!
